Sloppy Joe is a classic American home-style dish that’s a lot like a hamburger. What sets it apart is the filling: instead of a patty, it uses a meat sauce made with ground beef and other ingredients. The word “sloppy,” which inspired the dish’s name, suggests something messy or untidy—fitting, since the meat sauce tends to spill out as you dig in. Despite its quirky name, it has an irresistibly addictive flavor you’ll want to enjoy again and again. This version uses easy-to-find seasonings that make it simple to prepare at home!

Instructions

1

Finely chop the onion. Cut the green pepper in half lengthwise, remove the seeds and white membrane, and dice into ¼-inch (5 mm) pieces.

2

Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it's about half browned. Add the onion and green pepper, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until coated with the fat. Blot off any excess fat with paper towels, then add the seasonings marked with ☆ and mix. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about 8 minutes.

3

Heat the butter in another frying pan. Once melted, place the buns cut-side down in the pan and toast until lightly browned.

4

Pile plenty of the sauce onto the buns and divide the cheese evenly over the top. Sandwich together with the remaining buns.

Note:

Use cheese meant for eating as is, and let the residual heat melt it.
